Description

This module provides core science knowledge and experimental skills required to undertake undergraduate study in a range of engineering disciplines and computer science. Using laboratory activities, it equips students with the skills to understand and apply core concepts and principles in an engineering context. The module delivers core mathematical knowledge and skills that can be applied to scientific investigation.

The module is delivered through laboratory sessions supported by lectures and online learning material, following a model of laboratory preparation where the scientific topic required for the laboratory is investigated. Initially, pre-defined experiments are conducted, and as the course progresses, students take increased ownership of the design of their experiments.

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a foundational level of knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles on which physics and mechanics in engineering are based.
  • Engage in the design, planning, and execution of simple scientific experiments and present the findings in a written account.
  • Identify where appropriate scientific principles can be used in the development of solutions to simple real-world problems.
  • Demonstrate an ability to use basic laboratory equipment correctly and conduct experiments reliably and safely.
