BSc Information Management For Business

Overview

The BSc Information Management for Business (IMB) is a pioneering degree programme that offers a distinctive balance of IT, Management, and Business to ensure that students have the skills and expertise needed to thrive in the industries of the future. The programme is developed in close collaboration with some of the UK's most well-known companies and is underpinned by emerging research and practice.

Programme Structure

The programme is a full-time, three-year degree that consists of eight compulsory modules in the first year, seven compulsory modules in the second year, and four compulsory taught modules in the third year, along with an extended project and two elective modules. The programme also offers an Extra Mural Year (EMY) option, which allows students to gain professional or industrial experience through a work placement.

Teaching Methods and Contact Hours

Teaching and learning are conducted through lectures, seminars, and computer practicals, supported by a developing digital campus. Students engage in business-focused workshops, industry guest lectures, and scenario-based challenges, as well as individual and group projects, timed examinations, quizzes, and presentations. Extensive background reading and independent research are required throughout the programme.

Extra-Curricular Activities

The programme offers various extra-curricular activities, including the "How to Change the World" programme, which allows students to collaborate on challenge-based, problem-solving activities with partners from organisations such as the Red Cross/Red Crescent, Department of Transport, Department of Energy and Climate Change, and the World Bank.

Diversity

UCL was founded in 1826 as a radically different university, opening higher education for the first time to people of all beliefs and social backgrounds. The university aims to achieve an equal gender split of 50:50 females to males and currently has approximately 40 nationalities represented in the programme.

Employability and Careers

The programme provides students with many skills, including a solid core in business, project management, and teamwork, as well as greater depth and breadth in technical capacities. IMB graduates work with leading companies in the UK and internationally, in sectors such as investment banking, computer programming and consultancy, advertising, insurance, and management consultancy.

Applications

The IMB programme is about connecting business with technology in the new digital economy, and the university is looking for students who are innovative, resourceful, and adaptable. Applications are made through the UK Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) system, and the programme is very heavily oversubscribed, so early application is advised.

Entry Requirements

GCSE requirements are for Home Applicants who have been solely educated in the UK, and the university requires English Language at grade B or 6 and Mathematics at Grade C or 4. Students need AAA grades at Advanced (A) level, with Science or Social Sciences preferred. A variety of other qualifications are accepted from the UK and worldwide.

Fees and Funding

Course fees can be found on the UCL website, and scholarships are available through UCL for all years of study. Competition for scholarships is fierce, and to stand a chance of being chosen, students will need to show evidence of commitment and the potential for high achievement.

Open Days

UCL provides regular open days and other forms of public access, and anyone wishing to visit to discuss the BSc Information Management for Business programme is always welcome to do so.

Careers Support

The programme offers bespoke careers support throughout the student's time at UCL, including individual career coaching sessions, careers and professional development workshops, and exclusive industry insight sessions and employer-led events. The university also has a dedicated careers team that helps students present themselves to leading graduate employers with confidence.
