Introduction to the Archaeology Grad Dip Program

The Archaeology Grad Dip program at University College London (UCL) is designed for students who have not studied archaeology at the undergraduate level and wish to pursue a career in this field. This one-year Graduate Diploma program provides a strong foundation in the major aspects of archaeology, preparing students for Master's level study.

Program Overview

The program is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, museum visits, and laboratory classes. Students will take two compulsory modules that provide a grounding in archaeological theory and the interpretation of archaeological data and evidence. They will also select 90 credits of optional modules from a list of available modules, according to their own particular interests.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the program, students must have a minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor's degree in a non-archaeology subject from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. English language requirements also apply, with a minimum level of 2 required.

Tuition Fees

The tuition fees for the program are as follows:

• UK students: ｣11,200 (full-time), ｣5,600 (part-time)
• International students: ｣28,400 (full-time), ｣14,200 (part-time)

Duration and Study Mode

The program can be taken full-time over one academic year or part-time over two academic years.

The program consists of two compulsory modules and a range of optional modules, including:

• Current Issues in Archaeological Theory
• Interpreting Archaeological Evidence
• Optional modules cover topics such as:
  • Archaeological technologies and surveying
  • Area studies (e.g., Egypt, China, Near East)
  • Time periods (e.g., Neolithic to modern day)
  • Public Archaeology
  • Introduction to Ancient Egyptian Language
  • Roman Britain: History and Archaeology

Fieldwork

There is no compulsory fieldwork element in this program, but students will have the opportunity to participate in voluntary activities such as the Institute's summer field training course.

• Graduate Diploma students may participate in the Institute of Archaeology's summer field training course, which involves extra costs of approximately ｣500.
• The cost of a monthly 18+ Oyster travel card for zones 1-2 is ｣119.90.

Employability and Career Prospects

The diploma will give students who do not have an undergraduate degree in archaeology the necessary theoretical background to proceed onto graduate study. Many graduates go on to enroll for Master's degrees in archaeology at UCL, and the skills gained are also well-suited for jobs in sectors such as archaeology, environmental and sustainability, journalism, civil service, and tourism and heritage management.
