Program Overview

Introduction to Cognitive Neuroscience MRes

The Cognitive Neuroscience MRes program is designed to provide high-quality research training on mental processes in the healthy and diseased human brain. This program brings together some of the world's leading researchers in cognitive neuroscience and cognitive neuropsychology, offering students an ideal environment to prepare for independent research careers in this fast-developing field.

Program Overview

The program is suitable for students with a relevant scientific background, such as psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, or biomedical science. Candidates should have previous research experience and demonstrate that they can conduct a large research project. The program is not designed to teach students how to conduct research.

Key Features

  • The program develops key transferable skills, including project management, logical thinking, oral and written communication, and independent learning.
  • The MRes has a greater emphasis on the research project than the Cognitive Neuroscience MSc.
  • Students learn about the relationship between the mind and the brain in patients and healthy individuals, alongside the ideas, methodology, and current state of knowledge in cognitive neuroscience.

Entry Requirements

Normally, a minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor's degree from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard is required. English language requirements are also applicable, with the English language level for this course being Level 2.

Equivalent Qualifications

International applicants can find out the equivalent qualification for their country by selecting from a list of countries. The equivalency will correspond to the broad UK degree classification stated on the page.

Course Structure

The program is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes, and seminars. Depending on the chosen optional modules, it includes the analysis of neuroimaging data, critical analyses of published scientific papers, and discussion seminars.

Modules

  • Compulsory modules:
    • Intermediate statistics: Data analysis and visualisation with R
    • Communication Skills in Cognitive Neuroscience
    • Advanced statistics: Data analysis and modelling with R
    • Cognitive Neuroscience MRes Project
  • Optional modules:
    • Methods in Cognitive Neuroscience: Neuroimaging
    • Structure and Function of the Brain
    • Methods in Cognitive Neuroscience: Neuropsychology
    • Designing and Analysing fMRI experiments
    • Current Issues in Cognitive Neuroscience: Elaborative and Adaptive processes
    • Current Issues in Cognitive Neuroscience: Translational Research
    • Current Issues in Cognitive Neuroscience: Fundamental Processes

Teaching and Learning

Assessments take various forms, including critical analyses, scientific essays, exams, a scientific poster, and public engagement video. A key part of the program is a research project, which is assessed via a dissertation and oral examination. On average, students spend 70% of their time on the research project and 30% in class.

Fees and Funding

The tuition fees for the program are:

  • UK students: Ł16,800 (2026/27)
  • International students: Ł42,700 (2026/27) There are no additional course-specific costs. However, students should consider the cost of living in London and any additional expenses related to their research project.

Career Prospects

The MRes is a very selective program that develops key research skills in the field of cognitive neuroscience and serves as a basis for PhD study in an academic setting or a research career in industry or business. Many students choose to go on to a PhD or research positions in universities, while others go into industry, education, and medical careers.
