Program Overview

Introduction to the Education (Science) MA Program

The Education (Science) MA program at University College London (UCL) is designed for science teachers or educators looking to further their career or become science educators. This program allows students to critically explore how science is taught and learned, engaging with theoretical aspects of science education.

Program Overview

The program is offered full-time, part-time, or on a modular (flexible) basis. It consists of two compulsory modules and two optional modules, along with a dissertation. The compulsory modules include Foundations of Science Education and What is Education? The optional modules cover a range of topics, including Curriculum Development, Assessment for Learning, and Critical Perspectives on Learning and Teaching.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirement is a second-class Bachelor's degree from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Work experience is taken into account, and those who do not meet the minimum requirements should contact the Programme Leader. English language requirements are also specified, with Level 2 being the required standard.

Tuition Fees

  • UK students: 」14,200 (full-time), 」7,100 (part-time)
  • International students: 」35,400 (full-time), 」17,700 (part-time)
  • The program is also available on a modular (flexible) basis, with fees charged pro-rata to the appropriate full-time Master's fee.

Duration and Start Date

The program starts in September and can be completed in 1 calendar year (full-time), 2 calendar years (part-time), or up to 5 calendar years (flexible).

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Education (Science) MA program have gone on to successful careers in education, including promotions for those already teaching science, and new opportunities in schools, informal learning institutions, or science education policy and research.

Teaching and Learning

The program includes a range of teaching pedagogies, such as lectures, seminars, tutorials, group work, presentations, and online engagement. Students are supported by a dissertation supervisor and have the opportunity to engage with current issues in science education through the Science special interest group (SIG) community.

Accessibility

The department endeavors to make reasonable adjustments for students with disabilities. Details of the accessibility of UCL buildings can be obtained from AccessAble, and further information about support available can be found through UCL Student Support and Wellbeing Services.

Funding Your Studies

For a comprehensive list of funding opportunities available at UCL, including funding relevant to your nationality, please visit the Scholarships and Funding website. Scholarships relevant to this department are displayed, including the IOE - Aziz Foundation Scholarships and the IOE-Clarke Scholarships.

Application Process

There is an application processing fee, and when assessing applications, the admissions team would like to learn about the applicant's reasons for studying science education at graduate level, what attracts them to the program, how their academic and professional background meets the program's demands, and their professional aspirations. The personal statement is an opportunity to illustrate whether the applicant's reasons for applying match what the program will deliver.
