Description
This module deals with the role of English in diverse world contexts. It provides an initial background to the global spread of English from the perspectives of globalization theory, postcolonial theory and the politics of English as a global language. It examines different approaches to English as an international language such as superdiversity, translanguaging and translingualism, and explores different regions of the world with regard to the historical effects of English in these contexts. Weekly sessions are mainly based on the discussion of key readings in books and academic journals. Regions covered include East Asia, South Asia, Africa and Latin America. Students taking this module can expect critical engagement in discussions and debates about the role and dominance of English in the world today. Whether you are interested in applied or sociolinguistic approaches to language in the world, or your aim is to move into English language education, the issues and questions raised in this module are central to current disciplinary debates about English in a globalized and interconnected world.
