Description

The aim of this module is to provide an overview of the strategic management and leadership of construction projects. This includes exploring the owner's perspective on managing projects, the interfaces between the owner and supplier organisations, delivering projects successfully, stakeholder management, and the importance of leadership. The skills and competencies obtained through the module will equip students to lead complex construction projects, engage in teambuilding, and develop strategic thinking.

The module content is structured over several days, covering topics such as:


  • Day 1: Projecting the modern world, discussing the importance of projects, and exploring how projects achieve organisational goals and solve societal challenges.
  • Day 2: The three domains of project organising, introducing a holistic perspective on leading projects.
  • Day 3: Leading in project organising, introducing project leadership models and discussing the role and importance of project narratives.
  • Day 4: The owner domain, focusing on the capabilities of owner organisations that impact the successful delivery of construction projects.
  • Day 5: The supplier domain, exploring the capabilities of suppliers that impact project delivery and how suppliers can innovate through projects.
  • Day 6: The delivery domain, covering project domain in project organising and how to lead and manage construction projects throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Day 7: The governance interface, discussing governance in projects and approaches to governance that foster innovation.
  • Day 8: The commercial interface, exploring relationships between owner organisations and supplier organisations.
  • Day 9: Project narratives, including what project narratives are, why they are important, and how to manage them.
  • Day 10: Group presentations and preparation for coursework.
