Description
Content
In this module, students establish the foundations for a significant piece of individual research. This involves framing a research question and relevant objectives, identifying previous work that has been done that is relevant to the project, and selecting an appropriate research method and corresponding implementation plan.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students are expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to plan an extended programme of independent research.
- Explain the rationale for the project, including its purpose and importance to the relevant community.
- Conduct a preliminary literature review to explore the current state of knowledge and gaps relevant to the proposed research project, demonstrating comprehensive understanding of the relevant concepts of principles.
- Design a coherent research strategy or methodology for the research, consistent with the research question and the current state of knowledge, including an awareness of research ethics and data protection aspects.
- Understand conventions in academic writing, and write a research plan in an academic style.
- Identify and describe the resources necessary to conduct a piece of independent research.
- Identify the tasks anticipated in the research, and the relationship between the tasks, highlighting the critical path of tasks that cannot afford to be delayed.
- Conduct a comprehensive risk assessment for the project, including risk mitigations strategies
- Present research plan to an audience that has no previous knowledge about the research area and respond to questions.
