Description

This module considers the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people within school and the nested sub-settings that make up school. Children and young people spend most of their time in classrooms but also exist in other settings such as the school yard or playground, school dining room, and school corridors. Their activities, social interactions, and relationships with school staff and peers can have important implications for their engagement, learning, motivation, and individual feelings and beliefs about themselves and school, and how variations in these may change and develop over time. Specifically, the module will cover theoretical perspectives on school and classroom contexts and processes, peer relationships and interactions, school and classroom organisation, and teacher-pupil interactions/relationships. Taking a critically evaluative approach, students will develop a knowledge of theoretical perspectives on school and classroom settings and processes. Recent empirical, theoretical, and methodological advances in this field of research will be discussed and used to explore the implications for policymakers and practitioners working in educational settings.
