Description

Content

The Emerging Technology Review module requires students to work in groups of 3-5 and to critically evaluate an emergent technology, including:

  • Selecting a technology for the group to analyse
  • Describing the maturity of the technology
  • Evaluating the market potential for the technology
  • Identifying barriers and risks to the technology's exploitation
  • Suggesting a roadmap for technology development

Students receive tutorials to prepare them for the independent group work leading to a written report and presentation of their findings. They will prepare and deliver a 5000 word group report, present to an audience of tutors and the student cohort, and respond to questions about it.

Learning Outcomes

On conclusion of the module, students should have demonstrated their ability to:

  1. Plan and execute a small group research project
  2. Understand different roles in a project team and exercise initiative and personal responsibility, both as a team member and as a team leader
  3. Perform a literature review to explore the current state of knowledge about an emerging technology
  4. Analyse the maturity of an emerging technology
  5. Evaluate the market opportunity for an emerging technology
  6. Create a technology roadmap summarizing the future prospects of an emerging technology
  7. Understand conventions in academic writing, and write a research report in an academic style
  8. Conduct a comprehensive assessment for the barriers and risks to a technology's adoption
  9. Present to an audience that has no previous knowledge about the technology area and respond to questions

Themes for the Module (Module Outline)

The Emerging Technology Review aims to give students experience of applying techniques introduced in taught modules to produce a substantial analysis of a new technology, in terms of maturity, risks, market potential, road mapping, and development.

Teaching Delivery

Two tutorials will run in Term 2 and Term 3/Summer. A group presentation and a group report will be due in July.
