NPQLTD: National Professional Qualification for Leading Teacher Development

The National Professional Qualification for Leading Teacher Development (NPQLTD) is designed for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading the development of other teachers, curriculum leads, mentors, or trainees in their school.

About the Programme

The UCL Centre for Educational Leadership looks forward to working with participants on their newly designed NPQ, supporting them to deepen their knowledge of Leading Teacher Development within a collaborative and open learning environment. Based on the latest research and evidence, this new programme will enable participants to take their new learning and develop their skills and put them into practice.

What Will You Learn?

Participants will learn how to:

  • Develop teachers at all levels in their school, building strong systems that underpin their professional development.
  • Design effective CPD that makes a genuine difference to pupil outcomes.
  • Deliver effective professional development, deepening their knowledge of the best ways to develop models of professional development and dialogue that inspires teachers to become the experts that their pupils need.
  • Implement change successfully within their context by understanding the stages of implementation and applying them with the support of facilitators and colleagues.

Benefits for You

Participants have outlined many benefits to studying for an NPQLTD, including:

  • Developing the skills, confidence, and knowledge to implement new professional development initiatives successfully through a supported implementation project.
  • Understanding the key principles of how to design and deliver effective professional development programmes.
  • Appreciating the value of sharing ideas, best practice, and having thoughts and current practice challenged in a professionally safe space.
  • Learning how to think and plan in a structured way and apply that learning in their own school context.
  • Reflecting on the importance of effective professional development to student attainment.
  • Accessing research and materials and having many opportunities to discuss a variety of professional development approaches and models with other teachers.

Benefits for Your School

The programme has been developed with teachers and leaders to:

  • Create professionally confident teachers and leaders.
  • Grow the next generation of leaders with the skills and knowledge to use the evidence-base for the benefit of their children and young people.
  • Retain the best teachers who are excellent, collaborative role models for their schools and communities.
  • Inspire leaders who can harness the power of rich learning environments for their children and young people, no matter the current circumstances.

Is This Programme for Me?

Yes, if you are responsible for developing teachers at any stage of their career. Please be aware that the NPQ programmes require a level of proficiency in the use of English equivalent to that of Master's level study.

Programme Duration and Cost

The programme will start in November 2025 and will last for 12 months, followed by an eight-day open book summative case study task. The programme fee is £885 (+VAT) for participants and schools in England who are required to self-fund.

Programme Route Map

The programme consists of three modules, each lasting four months, with a final assessment preparation period. The modules include self-directed study, facilitated activities, and peer learning groups.

Final Assessment

The final assessment will be an eight-day open book summative case study task, which will take place after the 12-month programme.

What Do Participants Say?

Participants have praised the programme, saying it has given them professional confidence, time and space to reflect on themselves and the kind of leader they want to become, and increased knowledge in their chosen area of study. They have also appreciated the opportunity to share ideas and best practice with other teachers and leaders.
