Program Overview

Introduction to Aerospace Engineering with Pilot Studies with a Year in Industry MEng (Hons)

The Aerospace Engineering with Pilot Studies with a Year in Industry MEng (Hons) program is designed for students interested in becoming private or professional pilots. This course offers a comprehensive education in aerospace engineering, including pilot studies, to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in the industry.

Course Overview

  • The program is a five-year, full-time course that includes a year-long placement with an approved company or organization.
  • The course covers a wide range of topics, including aerodynamics, aerostructures, flight dynamics and control, propulsion systems, avionics, aerospace materials, and aircraft design.
  • Students will have the opportunity to study a variety of subjects, including aircraft design and manufacturing, flight testing, systems engineering, and independent research.

Year in Industry

  • The year in industry is a valuable component of the program, providing students with the opportunity to develop work-based transferable skills and professional competences.
  • Students will be supported in finding and applying for a placement with an organization, which could range from a local small/medium-sized enterprise to a global blue-chip engineering company.
  • The placement year is dependent upon placements being available and is subject to the student's performance in previous years.

Course Structure

  • Year one: Students will study the core engineering topics that provide a firm background and understanding of aerospace engineering, in addition to pilot studies modules and developing knowledge, skills, and experience of flying.
  • Year two: Students will continue to study the core engineering topics, as well as taking part in a two-day flight test course in the national flying laboratory aircraft.
  • Year in industry: Students will spend a minimum of 40 weeks employed in a company or organization, developing work-based transferable skills and professional competences.
  • Year four: Students will undertake an individual project, providing the opportunity to conduct independent research and/or develop innovative concepts in their preferred technical area of interest.
  • Year five: Students will study a range of advanced modules, including flight handling qualities, advanced fluid mechanics and aerodynamics, and aerospace capstone group design project.

Accreditation

  • All BEng/MEng degree programs are accredited, or preparing for accreditation, by at least one professional engineering institution, providing students with a solid foundation for their career.
  • An MEng degree in aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering from Liverpool satisfies all of the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Entry Requirements

  • A levels: AAB, including Mathematics and a second science.
  • T levels: Not currently accepted.
  • GCSE: 4/C in English and 4/C in Mathematics.
  • Subject requirements: Applicants following the modular Mathematics A Level must be studying A Level Physics or Further Mathematics as the second science.
  • International Baccalaureate: 34 points overall, with no score less than 4, and including 5 in HL Mathematics and 5 in HL Physics.
  • English language requirements: IELTS 6.0 overall, with no component below 5.5.

Fees and Funding

  • UK fees: Ł9,790 per year, with a year in industry fee of Ł1,955.
  • International fees: Ł32,000 per year, with a year in industry fee of Ł1,955.
  • Scholarships and bursaries: Available to help pay tuition and living expenses.

Careers and Employability

  • As a graduate of aerospace engineering, students will be equipped with the skills to work in the development and maintenance of aircraft, satellites, and space vehicles.
  • Typical types of work include airline operators, armed forces, government research agencies, and engineering and infrastructure companies.
  • 4 in 5 of engineering students find their main activity after graduation meaningful.
