Program Overview
Introduction to Architectural Engineering MEng (Hons)
The Architectural Engineering MEng (Hons) program is designed for students who wish to work at the intersection of architecture and structural engineering. This multidisciplinary degree encompasses civil engineering and architecture, jointly delivered by the School of Engineering and the School of Architecture.
Program Overview
The MEng is a four-year integrated Master's degree developed to fast-track graduates to become Chartered Engineers with the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institution of Highways Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation, and the Permanent Way Institution. Architectural engineers are responsible for the design of different systems within a building or critical infrastructure, focusing on key areas such as building structures, bridges, and environmental systems.
Year One Modules
- ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN 1 (ARCH111): Introduction to the principles of net zero carbon design, focusing on traditional climatically responsive architecture and the role of buildings in global energy usage and environmental impact.
- GEOMECHANICS 1 (CIVE120): Introduction to the fundamental principles and concepts of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering.
- CIVIL AND ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING PROJECTS (CIVE162): Introduction to projects within the built environment, including the roles of professional engineers and the skills required.
- SOLIDS AND STRUCTURES 1 (ENGG110): Introduction to the fundamental concepts and theory of how engineering structures work to sustain loads.
- INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING MATERIALS (MATS105): Overview of engineering materials, including their properties, selection, and application.
- ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS FOR CEE (CIVE198): Reinforcement and development of A-level mathematics, providing a strong background for engineering modules.
Year Two Modules
- ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN 2 (ARCH211): Introduction to energy and environmental issues in architecture, including the design of passive environmental systems for buildings.
- GEOMECHANICS 2 (CIVE220): Theoretical framework of geotechnical engineering, emphasizing soil as a material and applying theory to practical geotechnical engineering problems.
- GROUP DESIGN PROJECT (CIVE263): Realistic design brief requiring students to produce an open-ended structural design within a group working environment.
- STRUCTURAL ELEMENT DESIGN (CIVE241): Overview of basic structural design concepts and the application of common materials in construction.
- PROGRAMMING FOR CIVIL ENGINEERS (CIVE286): Introduction to programming skills for civil engineers.
- ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING AND INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT (CIVE261): Introduction to the contexts of transport and infrastructure, and the skills required by a professional engineer in this sector.
- ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS II (CIVE299): Development of mathematical skills for engineering applications.
- STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOUR (CIVE203): Detailed concepts of structural mechanics to improve understanding of structural behaviour.
- TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING AND MODELLING (CIVE212): Introduction to transportation engineering, focusing on transportation planning, traffic flow modelling, and sustainable transport infrastructure systems.
- ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING 1 (CIVE204): Introduction to environmental engineering, including water and soil pollution, catchment hydrology, and solid waste management.
Year Three Modules
- ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN 3 (ARCH311): Introduction to the design of environmental systems for large buildings, including artificial lighting, acoustics, and thermal environment.
- GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING (CIVE320): Theory and methods underpinning geotechnical engineering practice, covering the design of foundations, retaining walls, slopes, and other structures.
- INDIVIDUAL PROJECT (ENGG341): Individual research project allowing students to explore a topic in depth.
- EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING (CIVE342): Introduction to earthquake engineering, including the design of structures to resist seismic forces.
- SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT (CIVE350): Introduction to sustainable design and construction management principles.
- CONTEXT 2.1: HISTORY AND THEORY OF ARCHITECTURE (ARCH271): Architectural history and theory module focusing on modern architecture.
Year Four Modules
- ADVANCED GEOMECHANICS (CIVE420): Advanced topics in geotechnical engineering.
- CAPSTONE: MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROJECT (CIVE462): Final project integrating knowledge from previous years.
- MATERIALS FOR DURABLE AND SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION (CIVE401): Introduction to materials used in durable and sustainable construction.
- STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS (CIVE405): Advanced structural systems design.
- BIM IMPLEMENTATION IN COLLABORATIVE ENVIRONMENTS (ARCH725): Introduction to Building Information Modelling (BIM) and its implementation in collaborative environments.
- TECHNOLOGY 3.1: INTEGRATED TECHNICAL PROJECT DESIGN (ARCH361): Integrated technical project design, applying knowledge from previous years.
- ADVANCED CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT (CIVE450): Advanced construction management principles and practices.
