Program Overview

Introduction to the Mathematics MMath (Hons) Program

The Mathematics MMath (Hons) program at the University of Liverpool is a four-year integrated master's degree that provides students with a comprehensive education in mathematics. This program is ideal for ambitious students who want to study mathematics in depth and gain a master's qualification, which can provide a competitive edge in the employment market and open doors to careers in research.

Program Structure

The program is divided into four years, with the first two years being the same as the Mathematics BSc. In the first year, students study eight compulsory modules that cover the fundamentals of mathematics, including calculus, linear algebra, statistics, and mathematical IT skills. In the second year, students continue to study a range of important mathematical topics in more depth, with some compulsory modules and optional modules.

Year 1 Modules

  • CALCULUS I (MATH101)
  • CALCULUS II (MATH102)
  • INTRODUCTION TO LINEAR ALGEBRA (MATH103)
  • INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS USING R (MATH163)
  • MATHEMATICAL IT SKILLS (MATH111)
  • INTRODUCTION TO STUDY AND RESEARCH IN MATHEMATICS (MATH107)
  • NEWTONIAN MECHANICS (MATH122)
  • NUMBERS, GROUPS AND CODES (MATH142)

Year 2 Modules

  • DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS (MATH221)
  • VECTOR CALCULUS WITH APPLICATIONS IN FLUID MECHANICS (MATH225)
  • LINEAR ALGEBRA AND GEOMETRY (MATH244)
  • STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY I (MATH253)
  • COMPLEX FUNCTIONS (MATH243)
  • Optional modules, including:
    • CLASSICAL MECHANICS (MATH228)
    • METRIC SPACES AND CALCULUS (MATH242)
    • COMMUTATIVE ALGEBRA (MATH247)
    • STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY II (MATH254)
    • FINANCIAL MATHEMATICS (MATH260)
    • OPERATIONAL RESEARCH: LINEAR AND CONVEX METHODS (MATH269)
    • STEM EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION (MATH291)
    • NUMERICAL METHODS (MATH226)

Years 3 and 4

In years 3 and 4, students choose from a wide range of advanced modules in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics, enabling them to specialize in areas of mathematics that interest them most. Students also complete a substantial project on a mathematical topic of their own choice, supervised by an expert in the relevant field.

Module Details

  • MATH101: Calculus I - An introduction to calculus, covering limits, derivatives, and integrals.
  • MATH103: Introduction to Linear Algebra - A study of linear algebra, including vector spaces, linear transformations, and eigenvalues.
  • MATH122: Newtonian Mechanics - An introduction to classical mechanics, covering topics such as motion, forces, and energy.
  • MATH142: Numbers, Groups and Codes - An exploration of group theory and its applications to coding theory.
  • MATH225: Vector Calculus with Applications in Fluid Mechanics - A study of vector calculus and its applications to fluid mechanics.
  • MATH244: Linear Algebra and Geometry - A further study of linear algebra and its connections to geometry.
  • MATH253: Statistics and Probability I - An introduction to statistical methods and probability theory.
  • MATH269: Operational Research: Linear and Convex Methods - An introduction to operational research, including linear and convex optimization methods.
