Program Overview


Executive Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA)

The Executive DBA is a hybrid, part-time, action-research doctoral programme specifically designed for business leaders. It provides new skills to investigate and solve workplace issues using advanced research methods.


Introduction

The programme enhances existing management experience, allowing students to drive transformational change before and after graduation. Alongside gaining the highest level of academic qualification, the Executive DBA gives the opportunity to become a thought leader in a professional area.


Course Content

Pre-thesis Stage

The first two years involve completing four modules to expand research skills:


  • Introduction to doctoral research
  • Working with literature
  • Research methods
  • Designing scholarly practitioner research This stage combines online learning sessions and four on-campus residencies.

Thesis Development Stage

Students put new skills into practice by researching a particular aspect of their organisation, with regular one-to-one online support from a supervisor and continuous guidance via group seminars and refresher workshops.


Timeframe

The Executive DBA can be completed in 4.5 years, but can be extended to 7.5 years to account for personal or professional situations affecting progress.


Research Topics

The Executive DBA covers a broad range of potential topics for investigation across all aspects of business administration. Research proposals should focus on a specific managerial problem within the organisation.


Research Culture

The Management School is a research powerhouse, holding the gold standard 'triple-crown' accreditation from AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS. Students can participate in current research activities and join a school with international experts leading pioneering research.


How to Apply

To apply, students do not need to find a supervisor prior to starting the application. The application requires:


  • A research proposal (approximately 2,000 words)
  • Evidence of academic background (university transcripts, degree certificates)
  • Evidence of English language proficiency (if international)
  • A personal statement (approximately 500 words)
  • A curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Two references (one academic and one professional, or two professional)

Fees and Funding

  • Tuition fees for the academic year 2025/26 are £13,000 per year for the 2-year pre-thesis stage and £8,000 per year for the 2.5-year thesis development stage.
  • Tuition fees are the same for UK and international students.
  • Payment can be made in full or in three equal instalments.
  • If the programme takes longer than 4.5 years to complete, an additional £4,000 per extra year is required.

Entry Requirements

  • A UK undergraduate degree or international equivalent in a relevant subject, preferably with an Upper Second-Class (2:1) or above.
  • A UK or international equivalent MBA or master's degree in a business and management (or related) discipline.
  • At least 5 years of significant experience working at senior level within an organisation or as a consultant.
  • English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 overall, with no component below 6.5, or equivalent scores in other accepted language tests.

English Language Requirements

International applicants must demonstrate competence in the use of English language, with options for Pre-Sessional English courses to achieve the required level.
