Program Overview


Electronic Engineering and the Internet of Things with a Year in Industry MSc (Eng)

The University of Liverpool offers a well-established MSc program in Electronic Engineering and the Internet of Things with a Year in Industry. This course is designed to develop advanced knowledge and skills in key aspects of electronic engineering and the Internet of Things.


Introduction

The first year of this MSc program follows the same structure as the one-year MSc program. Students build their foundational knowledge through core topics, including embedded computer systems, digital system design, IC design, microprocessor systems, the Internet of Things, and research skills and project management.


Course Content

The course content is updated annually to maintain industry relevance and reflect the latest developments in the industry. Students will develop an understanding of the issues in designing complex digital and analogue systems, the capabilities of tools used for the design and simulation of these complex systems, and signal processing using digital systems.


Who is this Course for?

This course is aimed at graduates who already have a good general level of knowledge and understanding in electronics or closely related subjects with advanced knowledge and capabilities in specific areas of electronic engineering.

Accreditation

This course is pending accreditation by the Institution of Engineering and Technology on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer.


Course Structure

The program consists of two years. The first year includes core and optional modules, while the second year involves an industrial project and placement.


Year One

  • Semester One: Students develop practical programming and coding skills, and an introduction to the "Internet of Things."
  • Semester Two: Students learn about ARM Cortex M Microprocessors, digital design techniques, and materials used in microelectronics.

Year Two

  • Students undertake an industrial project and placement, typically 30 weeks from September to June.

Teaching and Assessment

Students learn through lectures, laboratory sessions, tutorials, and their own research on a specific topic. Assessment methods include final exams, quizzes, exercises, laboratory reports, presentations, oral examinations, and report writing.

Fees and Funding

  • UK Fees: £14,000 per year, with a year in industry fee of £2,800.
  • International Fees: £34,000 per year, with a year in industry fee of £6,800.
  • Scholarships and bursaries are available, including The Salters' Fellowship, Bracken Scholarship, and John Lennon Memorial Scholarship.

Entry Requirements

  • A 2:2 honors degree from a UK university or an equivalent academic qualification from a similar non-UK institution in a relevant subject.
  • English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 overall, with no component below 5.5, or Duolingo English Test 125 overall, with speaking, reading, and writing not less than 105, and listening not below 100.

Additional Information

The University of Liverpool has a dedicated team to help students find a suitable placement. Preparation for the placement is provided by the University's Careers and Employability Services. Students who are unable to secure a placement by the end of April in Year One will be transferred onto the one-year MSc to undertake the MSc project over the summer and graduate after one year.
