Electronic Engineering and the Internet of Things MSc (Eng)

The Electronic Engineering and the Internet of Things MSc (Eng) is a well-established program that develops advanced knowledge and skills in key aspects of electronic engineering and the Internet of Things. The course content is updated annually to maintain industry relevance and reflect the latest developments in the industry.


Introduction

On this program, students build foundational knowledge through core topics, including embedded computer systems, digital system design, IC design, microprocessor systems, the Internet of Things, and research skills and project management. Students also cover digital design techniques, materials used in microelectronics, and designing advanced embedded computer systems.

This course is aimed at graduates who already have a good general level of knowledge and understanding in electronics or closely related subjects with advanced knowledge and capabilities in specific areas of electronic engineering.

Accreditation

This course is pending accreditation by the Institution of Engineering and Technology on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Candidates must hold a CEng accredited BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree to comply with full CEng registration requirements.

Semester One

In the first semester, students develop practical programming and coding skills by creating software for engineering applications and an introduction to the "Internet of Things." Modules cover:


  • Digital design techniques
  • Materials used in microelectronics
  • Designing advanced embedded computer systems
  • Practical skills to develop the final project in semester three
  • Optional modules:
    • Image processing
    • Advanced systems modeling and control
    • Multi-core and multi-processor programming
    • Plasma system engineering
    • Mobile communications and security

Semester Two

The second semester introduces students to ARM Cortex M Microprocessors, covering general functionality, interfacing a peripheral to the AHB-Lite bus using microprocessors, and using RTX to implement a multi-threaded application. Students continue to develop knowledge of materials and digital design skills while building knowledge needed for the research project.


Final Project

Students undertake a master's project in Semester 3, aiming to:


  • Provide an in-depth understanding of a subject and learn research techniques
  • Develop the ability to assemble and analyze data and apply engineering principles to solve practical problems
  • Apply capacities (knowledge, initiative, enthusiasm, etc.) to plan, carry out, and control an open-ended project
  • Gain simulated experience working as a professional engineer in an industrial or research organization
