Introduction to Orthoptics (Pre-registration) MSc

Course Overview

The program consists of seven modules over two years, broadly categorized into three main themes: 'Orthoptic Clinical Practice and Theory', 'Ophthalmology and Optics', and 'Research Methods in Healthcare Practice'. Clinical education forms a key component of the program, with students learning through a mix of online and on-campus teaching, as well as clinical placements.

Course Structure

• Year one: Introduction to fundamental professional theory and development of primary clinical skills.
• Year two: Evolution of theoretic understanding of Orthoptics, with introduction to more sophisticated academic themes and subjects.

Year Two

• DISSERTATION: HEALTHCARE PRACTICE (HEAL418) - 45 credits
• OPHTHALMOLOGY AND OPTICS II (ORTH423) - 20 credits
• ORTHOPTIC CLINICAL PRACTICE AND THEORY II (ORTH424) - 30 credits

Fees and Funding

• UK fees: £9,790 per year (full-time)
• International fees: £32,000 per year (full-time)

Entry Requirements

• Postgraduate entry requirements: 2:2 honours degree or above, or equivalent.
• Personal statement: No more than 700 words, reflecting on understanding of the profession and relevant qualities.
• Interview: Part of the selection process, following the values-based recruitment (VBR) process.
• Declaration of criminal background and health screening are required.

English Language Requirements

• IELTS: 7.0 overall, with no component below 6.5.
• TOEFL iBT: 100 overall, with minimum scores of listening 21, writing 21, reading 21, and speaking 23.
• Duolingo English Test: 135 overall, with writing not less than 140, speaking and reading not less than 125, and listening not below 120.

Pre-sessional English

Available for international applicants who do not meet the minimum required standard of English language. The length of the Pre-sessional English course depends on the current level of English language ability.
