Introduction to Therapeutic Radiography and Oncology (Pre-registration) MSc

The MSc Therapeutic Radiography and Oncology is a 27-month, full-time programme of teaching and learning which integrates the clinical skills, academic knowledge, attitudes and understanding required to practice as a Therapeutic Radiographer.

Course Overview

The programme is designed to produce practitioners who are competent, discerning and committed to personal and professional development, whilst ensuring that their patients receive the treatment and care appropriate to their needs. Graduates from the programme will be fit for practice, purpose and award and will be flexible, adaptable individuals, capable of critical thinking and using an evidence-based approach to contribute to improvements in patient centred treatment and care.

Accreditation

The course is pre-registration and gives entitlement to register with the HCPC as a Therapeutic Radiographer.

Course Content

The programme content is organised into 4 key themes:

• Physical and Radiobiological Science for Radiotherapy
• Treatment Planning and On-treatment Verification Imaging
• Radiotherapy Theory & Clinical Practice
• Research

Year One Modules

• ONCOLOGY AND CLINICAL PRACTICE 2 (BREAST, BLADDER AND GYNAECOLOGICAL CANCERS) (RADT410) - 20 credits
• PHYSICS AND RADIOBIOLOGY FOR RADIOTHERAPY (RADT411) - 10 credits
• RESEARCH METHODS IN HEALTHCARE PRACTICE (HEAL417) - 15 credits
• FOUNDATIONS OF PHYSICS AND RADIOBIOLOGY FOR RADIOTHERAPY (RADT421) - 10 credits
• ONCOLOGY AND CLINICAL PRACTICE 1 (SKIN, COLORECTAL AND PROSTATE) (RADT420) - 20 credits

Year Two Modules

• TECHNOLOGY FOR RADIOTHERAPY (RADT413) - 10 credits
• ONCOLOGY AND CLINICAL PRACTICE 4 (RARE CANCERS AND PALLIATIVE CARE) (RADT412) - 20 credits
• PRACTICAL ISSUES IN RADIOTHERAPY (RADT423) - 10 credits
• ONCOLOGY AND CLINICAL PRACTICE 3 (HEAD, NECK AND THORAX) (RADT422) - 20 credits
• DISSERTATION: HEALTHCARE PRACTICE (HEAL418) - 45 credits

Teaching and Assessment

The learning and teaching strategy of Social Constructivism is intended to acknowledge and promote the need to develop the learner's knowledge, critical appraisal and evolving clinical skill as they progress through the programme. Assessments will be structured to allow the learner to be discriminating in their selection of appropriate information, designed to test the ability of the learner to conceptualise, critique and evaluate, and an appropriate method of assessing modular learning outcomes and learning level.

Career Opportunities

This is a vocational programme to develop graduates to become Therapeutic Radiographers, affording employment in either the NHS or the private sector as a Band 5 therapeutic radiographer. Options are to progress towards advanced and consultant practice, undertaking further postgraduate qualifications, or progressing into management with a managerial qualification such as an MBA.

• UK fees (applies to Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Republic of Ireland): Full-time place, per year - ｣9,790
• International fees: Full-time place, per year - ｣32,000
• Tuition fees are for the academic year 2026/27 and are subject to increase each year.

Entry Requirements

• Postgraduate entry requirements: 2:2 honours degree or above in a relevant health, physical, biological or life science subject.
• Personal statement: No more than 700 words, reflecting on your understanding of the profession and relevant qualities valuable to a healthcare professional.
• Interview: Forms part of the selection process, following the values-based recruitment (VBR) process.
• Declaration of criminal background: Information about any criminal offences of which you may have been convicted, or with which you have been charged.
• Health screening: Completion of a health questionnaire and a satisfactory assessment of fitness to train from the University's Occupational Health Service.

English Language Requirements

• IELTS: 7.0 overall, with no component below 6.5
• TOEFL iBT: 100 overall, with minimum scores of listening 21, writing 21, reading 21 and speaking 23
• Duolingo English Test: 135 overall, with writing not less than 140, speaking and reading not less than 125, and listening not below 120
• Pearson PTE Academic: 69 overall, with no component below 61
• LanguageCert Academic: 75 overall, with no skill below 70
• PSI Skills for English: C1 Pass in all bands
• INDIA Standard XII National Curriculum (CBSE/ISC): 75% and above in English
• Accepted State Boards: 80% and above in English
• WAEC: C6 or above
