Program Overview
Introduction to the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in Radiotherapy Module
The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in Radiotherapy module is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of MRI equipment, theory, and imaging capabilities. This understanding will facilitate critical evaluation of the impact of the modality on the efficacy of radiotherapy planning and delivery.
Module Delivery
- The module is delivered part-time, with the entire module being completed in one semester.
- The module runs in semester 2.
Key Dates and Application Information
- Apply by: 28 November 2025 (for semester 2)

- Cost: Ł1300 (20 credits)
Target Audience
The module is designed for practising, registered healthcare professionals and can be used to support continuous professional development.
Module Details and Indicative Content
Learners will critically evaluate the relevance of different MRI sequences for imaging a range of anatomical sites and the impact of MRI in radiotherapy planning on patient dosimetry and outcomes. Additionally, learners will assess published findings relevant to MRI in radiotherapy and evaluate the current and emerging role of MRI in radiotherapy for a chosen tumour site.
Assessment
There are 2 summative assessments associated with this module. To support summative assessment, there are also opportunities to undertake formative assessment.
School of Allied Health Professions and Nursing
The School of Allied Health Professions and Nursing is part of the Institute of Population Health and the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
Research Areas
While specific research areas within the module are focused on MRI in radiotherapy, the broader school engages in various research activities, including but not limited to cancer care, diagnostic radiography, physiotherapy, and orthoptics.
Professional Development
The module contributes to the professional development of healthcare professionals by enhancing their knowledge and critical evaluation skills in the application of MRI in radiotherapy. This is part of the school's commitment to continuing professional development (CPD) and lifelong learning.
Module Objectives
Upon completion of the module, learners are expected to have a comprehensive understanding of MRI in radiotherapy, including its principles, applications, and impact on patient care. This knowledge will enable them to critically evaluate and apply MRI in radiotherapy planning and delivery, contributing to improved patient outcomes.
