The Associate in Applied Science Degree (AAS) in Health Services Administration Medical Insurance, Billing, and Coding is a comprehensive program designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the healthcare industry.
Program Requirements
To qualify for graduation, students must pass all Medical Insurance, Billing, and Coding (MBC) courses and Medical Terminology with a minimum grade of C, pass Anatomy and Physiology I and II with a minimum grade of C+, and participate in the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) certification examination. Students are also strongly encouraged to register for and participate in the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification examination.
Course Sequence
The program consists of four semesters, with the following course sequence:
First Semester
- SCI1100: Anatomy and Physiology I (3 credits)
- HEA2200: Medical Terminology (3 credits)
- SOC2225: Introduction to Psychology (3 credits)
- ENG1105: Writing and Research (3 credits)
- CIS1115: Computer Applications (3 credits)
Second Semester
- MBC1105: Medical Coding (4 credits)
- SCI2100: Anatomy and Physiology II (3 credits)
- MBC2211: Medical Billing and Reimbursement Methods (3 credits)
- SCI1115: Basic Pharmacology and Pathophysiology (3 credits)
- HEA1101: Foundations of Health Services (3 credits)
Third Semester
- HEA2255: Electronic Health Records (3 credits)
- MBC2221: Clinical Documentation and Compliance (3 credits)
- MBC2201: Hospital Coding (3 credits)

Fourth Semester

Graduation Requirements
A total of 60 semester credits are required for graduation.
Certification and Employment
Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania do not require individuals to obtain the CPC credential before becoming eligible for employment. However, employers may require the CPC credential or prefer candidates who have obtained the CPC credential.
Internship and Employment Opportunities
Eligibility for internships required to obtain a Berkeley College degree and employment opportunities in the healthcare field may be contingent upon the results of a criminal history background check as well as a post-offer medical examination, which may include drug and alcohol testing, and receipt of satisfactory references.
