Forensic Science and Criminology

Course Overview
This combined course has been awarded 'Recognition' by The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences (CSFS), ensuring its content and teaching are of a high, internationally recognized standard. The program is designed to develop students' skills in laboratory analysis, the interpretation and evaluation of evidence, and the communication of scientific findings.
Course Structure
The course is typically completed over three years, with the option to take an additional year for a placement in industry. The program consists of various units, including:
- Introduction to criminology and criminal justice
- Human anatomy and physiology
- Molecular genetics
- Chemistry for forensic scientists
- Skills for forensic scientists
- Evidence examination skills
Year 1
In the first year, students explore the key theories put forward to explain crime, deviance, and offending behavior. They also develop their understanding of human anatomy and physiology, molecular genetics, and chemistry for forensic scientists.
Year 2
In the second year, students delve into topics such as prisons, probation, and offender rehabilitation, as well as the role of victims in the criminal justice system. They also develop their skills in science, including experimental design, lab safety, data analysis, and finding sources.
Year 3
In the final year, students undertake a research project or dissertation, which can be either criminology-based or lab-based. They also study topics such as urban crime, forensic analysis, and the evaluation of forensic evidence.

Careers

Entry Requirements
The typical entry requirements for this course are 48 UCAS tariff points, including 32 from at least one A-level or equivalent.
Fees
The full-time standard undergraduate tuition fee for the Academic Year 2026/27 is £9,790 per year for UK students and £16,900 per year for international students.
Scholarships
The University offers a range of scholarships, including Excellence Scholarships worth £2,500 per year of study over three years, and Achievement Scholarships offering £500 per year of study.
