About This Course

This course introduces students to accounting, accountability, and decision-making, focusing on the use and impact of internal and external accounting information on economic and social outcomes. Students will learn about organizational structures, financial statements, basic principles of taxation, sustainability accounting, and the impact of technology on accounting.


Course Learning Objectives

Students who pass this course will be able to:


  1. Describe key features of the role and responsibilities of the accounting profession and its impact on society and the economy
  2. Explain organizational structures and the different sectors of the economy in which accounting operates
  3. Explain internal and external accounting and accountability practices as well as basic tax concepts
  4. Explain sustainability concepts and how to account for social and environmental performance
  5. Explain the impact of technology on accounting

How This Course Is Taught

The course is optimized for face-to-face delivery on campus, with lectures accessible via synchronous (live-stream) Zoom. All lectures will be recorded and available throughout the course. Tutorials are available face-to-face with at least one Zoom option and are not recorded. In-person attendance is required for assessment in the examination period.

  • IN-PERSON Final Test (during examination period): 50%
  • NUKU Quizzes (Online, best 3 out of 5): 10%
  • Mid-trimester test (online, via Nuku): 20%
  • Assignment: 20%
