Course Overview

The STAT 193 course, also known as Statistics in Practice, is an applied statistics course designed for students advancing in various disciplines, including those majoring in Statistics. Course Objectives

Students who pass this course should be able to:


  1. Identify and interpret differences between different data types.
  2. Choose, construct, and interpret appropriate visual and numerical data summaries for each data type.
  3. Explain and apply concepts of probability, random variables, and probability distributions.
  4. Explain and apply the concept of sampling variability.
  5. Pose and test a hypothesis to answer a research question of interest on specified univariate and bivariate data types and interpret the results of the hypothesis test plus associated confidence intervals.
  6. Use statistical software to summarize, display, and analyze data.

How the Course is Taught

  • The course material will be delivered in lectures.
  • Students are expected to attend at least one workshop/tutorial per week.
  • A scientific or graphics calculator is highly recommended for the final in-person exam.
  • There is no required text for STAT 193; course notes will be provided.

Assessment

  • Final In-Person Written Exam: 40%.
  • Online Quizzes (Weekly): 30%.
  • Assignments (x3) - Written: 30%.

Mandatory Requirements

To pass this course, students must:


  1. Achieve an overall pass mark of at least 50%.
  2. Achieve a mark of at least 30% in the exam.
