About This Course
The course draws on a range of risk techniques that health and safety professionals should be aware of to aid in gathering the best available information for effective risk assessments. These techniques are placed in the ISO31000 Risk management - guidelines framework and process. The final part of the course examines the place of the New Zealand accident compensation scheme in injury prevention and rehabilitation.
Course Learning Objectives
Students who pass this course will be able to:
- Describe risk management frameworks and processes for health and safety, reflecting an understanding of the relationship between health and safety risk management and enterprise-wide risk management (ISO 31000).
- Describe risk identification and assessment methods for acute, chronic, and catastrophic health and safety risks.
- Apply health and safety risk control principles using a widely-accepted hierarchy of control measures.
- Describe approaches to injury and ill health management (incident management, rehabilitation/return to work, and case and claims management).
- Apply methods for monitoring and evaluating risk control effectiveness and implementation.
How This Course Is Taught
This course will be taught online with compulsory block course days at the Kelburn Campus, Wellington, with an option to join online. There will be weekly online evening tutorials that will be recorded if you are unable to attend. However, attendance is strongly recommended. Short weekly lectures will be recorded and give further guidance to the modules and eBook chapters. Recordings will be made available on Nuku. The course will use an eBook that can be downloaded free and covers papers HLWB507 and HLWB509.
Assessment
- Academic Essay (includes either Ishikawa diagram or bow tie analysis): 50%
- Academic Journal Article: 30%
- Presentation with a Slideshow: 20%
Mandatory Requirements
To pass this course, students must:
- Achieve an overall pass mark of at least 50%.
- Achieve at least 50% for each assessment.
- Attend all university block courses, except in cases of exceptional personal circumstances.

What You'll Need to Get
In addition to the eBook, students will need to print one copy of a prepared "Risk Canvas" sheet at A1 size and purchase some 40mm wide Post-it notes for recording causal factors of an event and its consequences in the form of a bowtie analysis.
