Course Learning Objectives
Students who pass this course should be able to:
- Identify potential hazards in construction workplaces.
- Conduct risk assessments to evaluate the likelihood and severity of workplace hazards.
- Explain relevant health and safety legislation, regulations, and codes of practice applicable to the New Zealand construction industry.
- Develop and implement safe work practices and procedures to control and mitigate workplace hazards.
- Communicate effectively about health and safety issues.
How This Course is Taught
This course will be delivered through a combination of lectures, guest speakers, discussions, and tutorials in a studio environment. The teaching approach includes:
- Lectures and guest speakers to introduce key concepts, legislation, and best practices in construction health and safety.
- Discussions and tutorials to allow students to apply their knowledge through case studies, group discussions, and practical exercises.
Assessment
- Assignment 1: Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (30%)
- Assignment 2: Safe Work Procedures (40%)
- Presentation: 2x 10-minute presentations for Assignment 1 and 2 (30%)
