Course Overview

The Landscape Architecture Design Studio II (LAND 212) is a studio-based course that investigates planting design in landscape architecture. The course aims to provide students with an understanding of plants and planting design to enrich and inform their landscape architecture practice.

Course Objectives

Students who pass this course should be able to:


  1. Identify design potential through the analysis of a site
  2. Apply design methods through site design
  3. Communicate the design investigation and outcomes verbally and graphically
  4. Demonstrate appropriate plant selection and produce planting documentation

How the Course is Taught

  • Lectures and tutorials are delivered in-person
  • Lecture recordings are made available for subsequent revision
  • Field trips require in-person attendance
  • The course includes 2 scheduled times per week: 2 x 4-hour studio-based sessions
  • Teaching strategies include class site visits, field trips, desk crits, and a mix of face-to-face and online learning sessions

Assessment

  • Project 1: Analysis and preliminary design (30%)
  • Project 2: Concept design (30%)
  • Project 3: Developed design (40%)

What You'll Need to Get

Students will need to provide all materials and equipment necessary for the completion of required work, including:


  • Sketchbook or sketchpad
  • Pencils and erasers
  • Markers, pencils, pastels, and pens for rendering
  • Roll tracing paper
  • Other materials necessary for assignments
  • It is recommended that students have their own laptop and consider purchasing a simple digital camera
