Course Description
INTA 311 is a studio-based course that explores the design potential of surface, materials, colour, light, pattern, and artefacts in interior space, with an emphasis on human habitation. This course is a core studio course for the Bachelor of Architectural Studies: Interior Architecture degree.

About This Course
INTA 311 is an on-campus only course, not available for distance study. All class sessions will be delivered in person at the Te Aro Campus. This studio course aims to build upon and expand the core design skills gained in Year Two of the degree by establishing a high level of analytical, critical, and creative thinking.
Course Learning Objectives
Students who pass this course should be able to:
- Demonstrate competence in engaging with themes relating to the somatic (human body's relation to space).
- Integrate diverse design models with aesthetics and functions within a complex typology.
- Integrate theoretical ideas about brand and culture, considering human sensitivity, pragmatism, sustainability, and constructability.
- Experiment and communicate Interior Architecture design ideas using diverse media to address critical issues about human inhabitation.
How This Course Is Taught
INTA 311 is delivered through 2 x three-hour studio sessions over twelve teaching weeks, mainly taught through interactive presentations and in-studio tasks, supplemented by group and individual tutorials.
Assessment
- Stage One: Investigates the somatic and embodied space. (Type: Individual, Mark: 30%)
- Stage Two: Investigates design issues of particular cultural and contextual relevance. (Type: Individual, Mark: 30%)
- Stage Three: Includes the design of a restaurant interior. (Type: Individual, Mark: 40%)
Mandatory Requirements
There are no mandatory requirements for this course.
Group Work
Students will participate in peer assessment, giving verbal and/or written feedback to their peers, to enhance creative critiquing skills.

What You'll Need to Get
Students need to provide all materials and equipment necessary for the completion of coursework, including drawing equipment such as a small visual diary, suitable drawing pens, pencils, and a pad of A3 butter paper.
