Course Overview
The course CHIN 201, Chinese Language 2A, is designed to build on the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills acquired in CHIN 102. Special attention is placed on developing students' ability to communicate in Chinese in basic social interactions and in further understanding Chinese society and culture through discussions on selected topics.

About This Course
This course will be delivered primarily on campus, with some online accessibility. It requires attendance for some activities, for which there are no online alternatives. The course aims to develop students' competence in Modern Standard Chinese at the intermediate level, using the core text "New Practical Chinese Reader: Textbook" (vol. 2) and additional learning materials provided in class or on the online learning platform Nuku.
Course Learning Objectives
Students who pass this course should be able to:
- Communicate orally in Chinese about basic social needs in a Mandarin (Putonghua) speaking environment.
- Compose and understand simple messages in modern standard Chinese.
- Demonstrate certain knowledge about Chinese language and culture.
- Present insights into various aspects of contemporary Chinese society and culture.
How This Course Is Taught
The course is delivered through:
- 3 one-hour lectures over 12 weeks
- 1 tutorial over 10 weeks
- Lectures are in person and recorded
- Tutorials are in person, with no zoom option
- Assignments can be submitted online
- Tests and quizzes are done in person and in class

- 5 In-class quizzes (5% each)
- 1 oral exercise (10%)
- 1 written assignment (200 characters, 5%)
- 1 composition (500 characters, 15%)
