Course Objectives

Students who pass this course should be able to:


  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of a Pacific Studies approach to studying the Pacific Heritage.
  2. Define and illustrate an understanding of key concepts such as discipline and interdisciplinary, imagined communities, structure and agency, indigenous knowledge and culture, and nationalism and regionalism.
  3. Use the key themes and concepts of PASI 101 in their own critical and/or creative analysis of particular cases where issues relating to the Pacific heritage are at stake.

  • Tutorials are in person and not recorded.
  • Written assessment can be submitted online, but tutorial seminar assessments are in person only.

  • Key Concepts and Questions Assignments (KCQS): 30%
  • Event Review: 10%
  • Proposal and Bibliography for POTO Essay or AKAMAI: 15%
  • Major Assessment (POTO Essay or AKAMAI Exhibition/Performance): 30%

Mandatory Requirements

To pass the course, students must:


  1. Attend and contribute to at least 9 of all tutorial sessions to achieve the course learning objectives.
  2. Achieve an overall pass mark of at least 50%.
