Course Overview

The ANFX 201 course, Animation and Visual Effects I, is offered by the School of Design Innovation at the Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation. This course explores 3D design principles unique to creating animation and visual effects media, where students create a series of digital artifacts for the screen.

Course Objectives

Students who pass this course should be able to:


  1. Identify the technical foundations for digital content creation.
  2. Successfully demonstrate cinematic language to construct linear media.
  3. Generate a cinematic sequence that integrates the strengths and interests of all group members within a collaborative project.

How the Course is Taught

  • Lectures, studios, and tutorials require in-person attendance.
  • Lecture recordings will be made available for subsequent revision.

Assessment

  • 5 quizzes of 6 questions, 1 point each on the core media production concepts discussed in class. Mark: 30%
  • Group project: Groups of two or three craft a cinematic visual effects sequence using tools, techniques, and principles covered in the coursework (expected workload: 50 hours). Mark: 35%
  • Individual project: an animated cinematic sequence using the tools, techniques, and principles covered in the coursework (expected workload: 50 hours). Mark: 35%

About the Course

This course aims to give students the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills relating to the principles of animation that can be applied to two and three-dimensional mediums. Through the use of digital tools, students will design and build both assets and animations that will teach fundamental skills relating to animation principles that can be used across a wide variety of time-based mediums. ANFX201 is an on-campus only course and is not available for distance study.
