Program Overview


Introduction to GAME 390

GAME 390, also known as Whakatinana ā-Wheako Hoahoa ā-Kēmu or Game Design Capstone, is a course offered by Victoria University of Wellington. In this course, students develop and build large-scale video game concepts in collaborative, interdisciplinary teams. Design students collaborate with students from the Graphics and Games major, applying their respective skills and knowledge from previous courses to develop a refined playable game output.

Course Objectives

Students who pass this course should be able to:


  1. Identify, scope, and articulate a design project and brief.
  2. Develop and implement design methods, techniques, and strategies.
  3. Communicate designs and critical perspectives through text, visual material, and appropriate design tools and formats.
  4. Critically reflect on personal design objectives and outcomes in the wider discipline, specifically focusing on designing in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

  • Lectures, studios, and tutorials require in-person attendance.
  • Lecture recordings will be made available for subsequent revision.
  • The class meets for 5 hours across 2 weekly sessions, including lectures and studios.

Assessment

  • Fully developed design concept proposal: 30%
  • Critical reflections on design practice: 30%
  • Final design and presentation: 40%
