Program Overview

Course Overview

The course examines the current role nature (genes) and nurture (environmental factors) play in shaping our brain and behaviour with a focus on the interaction between nature and nurture and the role of epigenetics.

About This Course

This course considers the evolutionary perspective on the biological basis of behaviour, exploring how genetic factors have shaped our brain in interaction with environmental pressures. Topics covered include molecular genetics, epigenetics, and gene-environment interactions.

Course Learning Objectives

Students who pass this course should be able to:

  1. Explain the basic concepts of genetics, including modes of inheritance and the role of DNA in genetics.
  2. Describe the general concept of epigenetics and how non-genetic factors can affect the function of DNA in a long-lasting manner across generations.
  3. Summarise the general principles of evolutionary psychology.
  4. Explain how genetic and non-genetic factors influence human behaviour, particularly within an evolutionary context.
  5. Demonstrate effective reflective discourse through critical analysis of peer discussions, evaluation of multiple perspectives, and articulation of how collaborative dialogue transforms their understanding of core concepts.

How This Course Is Taught

This course requires in-person attendance for all lectures and discussions. Lectures will be recorded, but discussions will not, as they are impractical to record and there is no online alternative.

Assessment

  • In-class test: 20%
  • Participation in in-class discussions: 10%
  • Weekly written reflections on scientific papers and discussions: 40%
  • Final reflection: 30%
