THEA 113: Ngā Kaiwhakaari - Playing for Real (Acting and Performance Skills) is a highly practical course that introduces key performance skills, which provide foundations for various acting methods and transfer to other contexts, such as public speaking.

Course Learning Objectives

Students who pass this course should be able to:


  1. Utilise foundational performance skills, which are transferable across varied performance techniques and contexts
  2. Provide feedback to fellow students in a constructive and concrete manner, which can be applied to enhance performance work
  3. Assess their own performance work and reflect on strategies for improvement
  4. Articulate the reasoning behind specific performance choices and assess the appropriateness of these choices in terms of style, context, and audience
  5. Utilise collaboration skills

How This Course is Taught

  • Lectures: Twice weekly, one-hour lectures, which are in-person and include class discussion, collaborative activities, and opportunities to ask questions. Lecture recordings are provided as an additional study aid.
  • Workshops: One two-hour workshop per week, available in-person only and not recorded. Workshops include group, partner work, and individual exercises to explore performance techniques.

Assessment

  • Auditioning with a Monologue: Individual, 30%
  • Scene Work Performance: Group Work, 35%
  • Performance Research Presentation: Individual, 35%

Mandatory Requirements

To pass this course, students must:


  1. Participate in at least 8 workshops, being active and present for 100% of their workshop.
  2. Achieve an overall pass mark of at least 50%.

What You'll Need to Get

Students are required to wear comfortable clothing for movement work in workshops. There are no required texts that need to be purchased for this course.
