Course Overview
The Project in Performance 1A (PERF 165) is a course offered by the New Zealand School of Music, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, at Victoria University of Wellington. This course involves an exploration of an area of learning specific to the research interests and activity of a music staff member. A proposal outlining the intended work for this course must be approved by the Director of the NZSM prior to the enrolment deadline.

Course Structure

- The course comprises 10 individual lessons and 20 instrument classes throughout the year.
Course Learning Objectives
Students who pass this course should be able to:
- Demonstrate an improvement in basic techniques on the instrument including general foundation work.
- Perform studies and pieces as assigned in public.
- Perform and work/rehearse well with peers under the guidance of the NZSM staff.
- Jazz students will demonstrate within an ensemble stylistic concepts of jazz accompaniment for improvised solos through the performance of assigned standard jazz tunes.
- Jazz students will demonstrate assigned improvisational concepts over determined standard jazz repertoire within an ensemble.
How This Course is Taught
- On Campus (with online): This course will be delivered primarily on campus, with online accessibility. Most students will attend on campus; however, the course can be completed online if needed.
- Components:
- Individual lessons: 10 x 1hr
- Classes as described in class times (joining and playing in the relevant NZSM instrument classes)
Assessment
- End of Year Recital (10 mins): 50%
- Mid-year Performance Assessment, Short Solo Work: 10%
- Fundamental Skills Assessment as Assigned by Teacher (scales/exercises during instrument classes): 10%
- Preparation and Progress for Weekly Lessons: 30%
Mandatory Requirements
To pass this course, students must:
- Achieve an overall pass mark of at least 50%.
- For Violin Technique:
- Complete and gain at least 50% in Assessments 1-2 by the specified dates.
- Attend at least 80% of instrumental lessons and instrumental classes, unless absence is due to verified medical reasons or advance permission for absence has been given.
What You'll Need to Get
- For Violin Technique: Please be prepared to make music purchases on a regular basis. You will slowly be building up your own library over many years, so regard it as an investment. Keep your eyes open for second-hand music, but learn first which editions are acceptable. There are also websites that offer cheaper downloadable sheet music.
