Introduction to Building Act and Resource Management Act
The course will be an introduction to the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the framework it creates for the sustainable management of New Zealand's natural and physical resources. The course will consider the application and operation of the RMA in a variety of contexts. The course will also give an overview of the Building Act 2004.

About this Course
This course will be an introduction to the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the framework it creates for the sustainable management of New Zealand's natural and physical resources. The course will consider the application and operation of the RMA in a variety of contexts. The course will also give an overview of the Building Act 2004.
Course Learning Objectives
Students who pass this course should be able to:
- Outline the basic concepts which underpin the RMA, including the concepts of 'environment', 'resources' and 'sustainable management', the values which must be considered in decision making, and the effect of the requirement to take account of the principles of the Treaty.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of Māori concepts and interests in decision-making under the RMA.
- Evaluate the decision-making roles and procedures, and the opportunities for public participation.
- Identify the different responsibilities and processes for resource management planning and consents, read plans, and determine consent applications.
- Identify the different responsibilities and processes under the Building Act 2004.
How this Course is Taught
The course will be delivered in a mixture of online classes and in-person seminars which will allow students to discuss issues raised in the online lectures in more detail.

- Mandatory requirements:
- Complete the reflection paper and the guided research paper; and
- Achieve at least 40% in all pieces of assessment.
