Course Overview
The French Language 2B course, denoted as FREN 202, is designed to develop skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking to an intermediate level, preparing students for more advanced language learning. By the end of this course, students will acquire knowledge of French syntax and vocabulary approximately equivalent to level B1 in the Common European Framework.

Course Objectives
Students who pass this course should be able to:
- Communicate orally with grammatical, lexical, and phonological accuracy about the issues covered in the course.
- Be proficient in the four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking of French to a minimum proficiency level of B1 in the Common European Framework.
- Demonstrate an appropriate level of knowledge of French grammar and transfer and adapt learned structures to new written and oral contexts.
- Show mastery of vocabulary related to cultural, historical, and social elements covered by the course.
How the Course is Taught
- The course is available to complete remotely, but students in Wellington are encouraged to attend in person.
- The course consists of 2 lectures and 2 tutorials per week.
- Lectures will be recorded and made available online.
- Independent work in addition to classes is essential.
Assessment
- 5 short video speaking exercises (3-6 minutes each): 25%
- Test 1 (written comprehension): 25%
- Test 2 (listening comprehension): 25%
- Individual oral interview (6-12 minutes): 25%
Mandatory Requirements
To pass this course, students must:
- Attend 80% of all tutorials (16 out of 20 possible sessions) or complete a make-up assessment as approved.
- Achieve an overall pass mark of at least 50%.
