Course Overview

The course SOSC 317, Complicating Resistance, examines knowledge, power, and the importance of critical self-reflection as it relates to liberation and democracy. Students will learn to use a variety of critical approaches and theories to examine key concepts and issues as they relate to the larger dialogues that exist within the discipline of sociology.

  1. Explain different ways in which to understand knowledge and power
  2. Critically evaluate diverse critical theories that connect to knowledge and power
  3. Differentiate alternative conceptualisations of democracy and liberation
  4. Examine self-reflexivity as it relates to knowledge, power, and liberation
