New Zealand Certificate in Animal Management Zookeeping

Programme Overview

The New Zealand Certificate in Animal Management Zookeeping is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to work in the zookeeping industry. Students will learn about animal behaviour, nutrition, health and welfare, as well as develop practical skills in handling and caring for a range of wild animals.


Career Outcomes

With this qualification, students can pursue a career in zookeeping, or work in related fields such as:

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for this programme, students must:


  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Have a minimum of 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 or higher, including:
    • 14 credits in two subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Statistics)
    • A further 14 credits in two additional domains
    • 8 credits in English or Te Reo Mori (4 credits in reading and 4 credits in writing)
  • Meet the English language requirements
  • Have a confirmed zoo placement
