Master of Science in Bioethics
The Master of Science in Bioethics program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the ethical principles and theories that guide biomedical research and practice.
Program Requirements
The program requires students to complete a total of 34 credits, including:
- 6 credits from MD course work from BPM I, II, and III
- 11 credits from core bioethics courses, including:
- BIOE 801: Research Ethics and Human Subjects (1 credit)
- BIOE 805: Clinical, Ethical, and Neuroscience Aspects of Pain (1 credit)
- SCSK 529: Bioethics Today (1 credit)
- 17 credits from thesis courses, including:

Course Descriptions
BIOE 801: Research Ethics and Human Subjects
This course presents international guidelines for ethical research and explores topics such as scientific integrity, authorship, and the relevance of culture and socioeconomics to research.
BIOE 804: Independent Study in Research Ethics
This course allows students to pursue independent research and study in research ethics, with permission from the instructor.
BIOE 805: Clinical, Ethical, and Neuroscience Aspects of Pain
This course introduces pain as a public health problem and covers topics such as the definition of pain, neuroanatomy, and neurophysiology of pain, and ethical issues related to pain management.
BIOE 807: Responsible Conduct of Research and Social Justice in Health
This course examines the responsible and ethical conduct of research, with a focus on the protection of human subjects and social justice.
BIOE 808: Bioethics Around the World
This course orients students to the MSc in Bioethics program and introduces foundational content and skills, including scientific integrity, responsible conduct of research, and bioethics principles and theories.
BIOE 809: Responsible Conduct of Research
This course focuses exclusively on the responsible conduct of research, covering topics such as scientific integrity, research design, data management, and peer review.
