Program Overview

Course Overview

The Radiology I course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of radiology in veterinary medicine. The course covers the basic principles of x-ray formation, image interpretation, and radiation safety, as well as the standard radiographic projections and techniques used in small animal radiography.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the basic principles of x-ray formation and image interpretation
  • Identify and describe the standard radiographic projections and techniques used in small animal radiography
  • Demonstrate an understanding of radiation safety and the principles of minimizing radiation exposure
  • Apply the basics of image interpretation to recognize normal and abnormal radiographic anatomy

Course Structure

The course consists of 8 lectures and 7 laboratory sessions, which cover the following topics:

  • Physics of radiology and radiation safety
  • Small animal thorax, abdomen, thoracic limb, pelvic limb, vertebral column, and skull
  • Radiographic technique and image quality
  • Radiation safety and protection

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the basic principles of x-ray formation and image interpretation
  • Identify and describe the standard radiographic projections and techniques used in small animal radiography
  • Demonstrate an understanding of radiation safety and the principles of minimizing radiation exposure
  • Apply the basics of image interpretation to recognize normal and abnormal radiographic anatomy

Assessment and Evaluation

The course assessment includes:

  • A formative quiz (22% of the overall grade)
  • A final examination (78% of the overall grade)
  • Lab attendance and participation (mandatory, but not graded)

Grading Policy

The grading policy is based on the SGU SVM grading scale, which is as follows:

  • A: >89.5%
  • B+: 84.5-89.49%
  • B: 79.5-84.49%
  • C+: 74.5-79.49%
  • C: 69.5-74.49%
  • D+: 64.5-69.49%
  • D: 59.5-64.49%
  • F: <59.49%

Recommended Study Strategies

Students are recommended to:

  • Read all the material provided in lectures and labs
  • Review the lecture and lab material prior to the exam
  • Familiarize themselves with the use of image manipulation software
  • Practice drawing the regions/projections to visualize them
  • Review 3D anatomy specimens or models to understand the three-dimensional aspects of radiology

Professionalism Statement

Students are expected to behave professionally, courteously, and respectfully towards their peers, staff, and faculty at all times. Cell phones should be turned off or set on silent during lectures and lab sessions. The use of computers, tablets, or phones for purposes other than following the lecture or lab is unprofessional and should not occur.
