Course Communication
Instructors are required to be available online consistently throughout the duration of the course to assist students with their studies, using methods such as virtual office hours, email, discussion boards, and student surveys.
Is Online Teaching Right for You?
The Faculty Center for Professional Excellence (FCPE) assists faculty in assessing their preparedness for online teaching, including evaluating their teaching style, technical preparedness, and organizational skills.
Personal/Organization
Faculty should consider their ability to:
- Communicate clearly through writing
- Be self-motivated and self-disciplined
- Initiate and moderate online class discussions
- Use or learn technology
- Believe in high-quality instruction outside of a traditional classroom
- Set specific objectives for courses
- Prepare each session's instruction before class
- Set limits for themselves
- Manage files and folders effectively
Technical Preparedness
Faculty should consider their:
- Regular access to a home computer/laptop with high-speed Internet
- Regular use of email as a communications method
- Ability to surf the Web and perform searches
- Knowledge of downloading files from the Internet
- Ability to attach files to outgoing emails
- Ability to sit at a computer for two or more hours at a time
- Necessary software applications on their home and/or office computer
Assessment
Depending on their answers to the above questions, faculty may need extra preparation before submitting a proposal for an online course. The FCPE can help faculty work on their technical and organizational skills to become more adept at leading students in an online course.
Next Steps
A good next step for faculty is to explore the FCPE's resources for online and blended course development to learn more about best practices and view planning tools.
