Program Overview


Master of Social Work Program

The Master of Social Work (MSW) program is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become competent social work professionals. The program is divided into two years: the Generalist Year and the Specialized Year.


Generalist Year

In the Generalist Year, students are assessed through various evaluation methods, including:


  • Practicum Instructor's Evaluation: This assessment measures the student's skill, value, and cognitive/affective processes in a practicum setting.
  • In-class Student's Evaluation: This assessment measures the student's knowledge, value, and cognitive/affective processes in a classroom setting.

The expected level of achievement for each competency is as follows:


  • Competency 1: Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior
    • Instrument 1: Practicum Evaluation - students must score 4 or above in the 5-point Likert scale
    • Instrument 2: SWK 520 Social Identity Paper - students must score a minimum of "B" grade on the paper
  • Competency 2: Advance Human Rights and Social, Racial, Economic, and Environmental Justice
    • Instrument 1: Practicum Evaluation - students must score 4 or above in the 5-point Likert scale
    • Instrument 2: SWK 500 Final Exam - students must score a minimum of 15 out of 20 points on the exam
  • Competency 3: Engage Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADEI) in Practice
    • Instrument 1: Practicum Evaluation - students must score 4 or above in the 5-point Likert scale
    • Instrument 2: SWK 511 Common Written Assignment - students must score a minimum of 6 out of 8 points on two 4-point grading criteria inclusive of the competency
  • Competency 4: Engage in Practice-informed Research and Research-informed Practice
    • Instrument 1: Practicum Evaluation - students must score 4 or above in the 5-point Likert scale
    • Instrument 2: SWK 557 Common Assignments: Quantitative and Qualitative Article Critique - students must score a minimum 16 of 21 points in the combination scores of Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q7, Q8 in the Quantitative part and Q2, Q4, Q5, Q6 in the Qualitative part
  • Competency 5: Engage in Policy Practice
    • Instrument 1: Practicum Evaluation - students must score 4 or above in the 5-point Likert scale
    • Instrument 2: SWK 500 Final Exam - students must score a minimum of 15 out of 20 points on the exam
  • Competency 6: Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities
    • Instrument 1: Practicum Evaluation - students must score 4 or above in the 5-point Likert scale

    • Instrument 2: SWK 521 Written Paper Part III - students must score a minimum of "B-" grade on the paper
  • Competency 9: Evaluate Practice with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities
    • Instrument 1: Practicum Evaluation - students must score 4 or above in the 5-point Likert scale
    • Instrument 2: SWK 557 Common Assignments: Quantitative and Qualitative Article Critique - students must score a minimum 16 of 21 points in the combination scores of Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q7, Q8 in the Quantitative part and Q2, Q4, Q5, Q6 in the Qualitative part

The competency benchmark for each competency is 80% of students achieving the minimum score.


Specialized Year

In the Specialized Year, students are assessed through various evaluation methods, including:


  • Practicum Instructor's Evaluation: This assessment measures the student's skill, value, and cognitive/affective processes in a practicum setting.
  • In-class Student's Evaluation: This assessment measures the student's knowledge, value, and cognitive/affective processes in a classroom setting.

    • Instrument 1: Practicum Evaluation - students must score 4 or above in the 5-point Likert scale
    • Instrument 2: SWK 722 Moodle Quiz - students must score a minimum of 11 out of 15 points on the quiz
  • Competency 3: Engage Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADEI) in Practice
    • Instrument 1: Practicum Evaluation - students must score 4 or above in the 5-point Likert scale
    • Instrument 2: SWK 710 Common Written Assignment - students must score a minimum of 7 out of 10 points on two 5-point grading criteria inclusive of the competency
  • Competency 4: Engage in Practice-informed Research and Research-informed Practice
    • Instrument 1: Practicum Evaluation - students must score 4 or above in the 5-point Likert scale
    • Instrument 2: SWK 758 Evidence Informed Practice (EIP) Paper - students must score a minimum of 64 out of 80 points on the combination scores of Step1, Stept2, and Step3 of the EIP paper
  • Competency 5: Engage in Policy Practice
    • Instrument 1: Practicum Evaluation - students must score 4 or above in the 5-point Likert scale
    • Instrument 2: SWK 722 Moodle Quiz - students must score a minimum of 11 out of 15 points on the quiz
