Course Outline

The programme starts with an introductory graduate transition year, where students study the principles of animal form and function, infections and responses, and animal husbandry. Upon completion of the transition year, students are fast-tracked onto the BVetMed course at the start of the third year. The Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine course is delivered across both campuses, with the first year primarily based at the Camden Campus and the remainder of the course primarily based at the Hawkshead Campus.

Learning and Teaching

The course is delivered through a combination of whole-class lectures, small group tutorials, group work in directed learning classes, computer-assisted learning, demonstrations, practical work in laboratory and dissection classes, and placements in veterinary practices. Self-directed learning is also an essential component, where students undertake reading, work on individual and group projects, and prepare for examinations.

Assessment and Feedback

Assessment in the final year includes the evaluation of knowledge, problem-solving, and professional behaviour on clinical rotations, practical skills through OSCEs, completion of a 4000-word research project, and a written examination testing clinical and professional decision-making.

Entry Requirements

• Academic qualifications: At least an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree in an appropriate biological science subject.
• GCSEs: Grade 4 (C) or above in English Language and Mathematics.
• International and EU applicants: Equivalent to a UK BSc (Hons) Second Class, Upper Division, or higher.
• Work experience: A total of 70 hours of work experience in one or more veterinary practices and 70 hours in non-clinical working environments with live animals.

Work Experience Support Programme

The Royal Veterinary College offers a Work Experience Support Programme for individuals from underrepresented backgrounds who have not been able to fulfill the work experience requirements. The programme provides an opportunity to gain the necessary experience and is only open to those applying to the BVetMed or Accelerated BVetMed programme via UCAS.

English Language Requirements

• IELTS (Academic) score of 7.0 or above with a minimum of 6.5 in each component.
