Program Overview
Digital Libraries Short Course
The Digital Libraries short course is a 15-credit module at SCQF level 11, providing students with a broad appreciation of digital library services and encouraging critical engagement with their roles and purposes.
Course Overview
This module examines and evaluates both the cultural and technical elements contributing to digital library services. It encourages students to evaluate critically the strategic application of digital library initiatives and develop strategies for planning and implementation.

What You Will Study
The module covers various topics, including:
- The development of digital libraries from early stages to the present day
- Profiling users and understanding their needs in respect of digital services
- Strategies and platforms for providing digital services
- Monitoring and understanding performance, including measuring impact
- Key legal and ethical issues around privacy, security, copyright, confidentiality, and data protection
Learning Methods
Students will learn via the online virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle, which provides live lectures, course materials, and allows study from any location. The module is delivered in 12 blocks online, with topic texts, recorded lectures, activities, and online discussion forums. Live online classes are also included.
Assessment
This module is assessed via a written assessment, including an essay.
Independent Study
Students are expected to engage in independent study activities, sharing thoughts and findings on the discussion forum.
Staff Delivering on This Course
The module is delivered by university staff, with recorded guest lectures and external experts from the profession.
Academic Support
The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students with sensory or mobility impairments, chronic medical conditions, mental health issues, dyslexia, and other specific learning differences.
Online Learning and Support
All students benefit from using the collaborative virtual learning environment, Moodle, with 24/7 online access to learning material and resources.
Study Skills Support
The Study Support Team provides training and support in academic writing, study skills, maths and statistics, and information technology.
Library Support
The Library offers support for the course, including books, eBooks, and journals, as well as online reading lists, workshops, and drop-ins on searching skills and referencing.
Entry Requirements
- Applicants normally hold a 2:2 undergraduate honours degree or its equivalent in any subject area.
- Applicants with a lower degree classification and/or relevant work experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- English Language Requirements: IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.

Accreditation
This module is part of the Information and Library Studies course and the Information Management course, both accredited by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.
