Program Overview
Introduction to BSc Maritime Studies
The BSc Maritime Studies is a one-year course designed for ambitious maritime professionals. The course recognizes the practical experience of cadets and supports them on their student journey to gain a degree.
Course Overview
The course consists of 120 SCQF level credits at level 9 and is delivered through a combination of live online sessions and access anytime materials. The course is designed to encourage students to combine elements of their learning from both the BSc and their previous learning to show their accumulated and integrated knowledge and understanding.
Mode of Study and Attendance
The mode of study is online learning, and the mode of attendance is part-time. The course starts in September and can be completed within 1-2 years.
Course Structure
The course is structured into two years:
- Year 1: Students will have the opportunity to evidence contemporary professional practice in the maritime industry and personal and professional development needs to maintain professional currency. They will also develop an understanding of the relevant legal and regulatory aspects of the maritime sector and the main cyber security threats to the maritime industry.
- Year 2: Students will learn about project management, which will provide an overview of the key principles, practices, and concepts of project management operations.
Interdisciplinary Course
The BSc Maritime Studies is an interdisciplinary course supported by expert staff from the School of Law and Social Society, Aberdeen Business School, and the School of Computing and Engineering Technology.

Assessment
Typically, students are assessed through:
- 2 reports
- 1 portfolio
- 2 set exercises in Year 1
- 2 reports in Year 2

Employers can help support their Maritime Studies students by providing opportunities for students to gain and apply knowledge relevant to their Maritime career and to acquire experiences, build competences, and reflect on personal and professional development.
Academic Support
The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia, and other specific learning differences.
Online Learning and Support
All undergraduate and postgraduate students benefit from using the collaborative virtual learning environment, Moodle. Students will be provided with 24/7 online access to their learning material and resources, along with the ability to interact with their class members and tutors for discussion and support.
Study Skills Support
The Study Support Team provides training and support to all students in academic writing, study skills, maths and statistics, and information technology support.
Library Support
The Library offers support for the course, including the books, eBooks, and journals students will need. They also offer online reading lists for many modules, workshops, and drop-ins on searching skills and referencing.
Job Prospects
The BSc Maritime Studies equips students with the acumen to navigate current and future maritime challenges. Graduates will emerge as sought-after professionals with a strong foundation in cyber safety protocols, law, and leadership.
RGUflex
The course consists of 60-120 SCQF level credits at level 9. Students may be able to continue to collect credit by undertaking short courses and working towards a BSc Hons Professional Studies Award.
Standard Entry Requirements
Entrants must hold an HND in Nautical Science or Marine Engineering or Technology or an equivalent qualification and normally be employed.
Advanced Entry
Entrants who hold a Scottish Professional Diploma in a relevant subject may undertake a fast-track option.
English Language Requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.
Fees and Funding
The tuition fees for the course vary depending on the student's location and mode of study. For the academic year, the fees are as follows:
- Scottish students: 」910 per year for part-time online study
- Rest of UK students: 」2,700 per year for part-time online study
- International students: 」2,700 per year for part-time online study

Some other costs are not included in the course fees, such as the cost of books, costs associated with any placement or study abroad, accommodation, and living costs.
