Introduction to BEng (Hons) Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
The BEng (Hons) Mechanical and Electrical Engineering course at Robert Gordon University is designed to meet industry demand for engineers with knowledge of both mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines. This course will provide students with the skills to produce safer, durable, and more efficient machines and systems to benefit society.

What You Will Study
The course is structured into four years of study, with each year building on the previous one to provide a comprehensive education in mechanical and electrical engineering.
Year 1
Students will develop basic knowledge and understanding of fundamental principles in mathematics, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering, as well as practical, organizational, study, and IT skills.
Year 2
Students will enhance their problem-solving skills and ability to interpret and critically evaluate technical data and information, understanding the relationship to wider society.
Year 3
This year enables students to develop their analytical skills and competence. They will also learn about and implement project management through studying key principles and undertaking group project work.
Year 4
In the final year, students will engage in an individual research or industrial project to integrate technical, transferable, and project management skills, increasing their depth of knowledge and understanding by studying further specialist modules.
Sustainability Commitment
The course incorporates sustainability, including environmental, social, and economic aspects, ensuring that students gain knowledge on design for sustainability by integrating renewable energy systems, efficient use of materials, and waste reduction strategies in engineering design.
Assessment and Feedback
- Assessment typically includes written exams and coursework.
- Feedback is provided within 20 working days of submission of coursework.
Academic Support
The university offers various support services, including the Inclusion Centre for students with disabilities, online learning and support through Moodle, and study skills support for academic writing, study skills, maths, and statistics.
Placements and Job Prospects
Although placements are not currently embedded in the BEng courses, graduates are highly sought after and have opportunities in the global oil and gas engineering sector, as well as in aerospace, transport, marine technology, health, and bioengineering.

Standard Entry Requirements
- SQA Higher: BBCC to include Maths and either Engineering Science, Physics, Chemistry, or Technological Studies.
- GCE A Level: CCC to include Mathematics and one from Physics, Chemistry, Design Technology, Electronics, or Engineering.
- Irish Leaving Certificate Higher: H3H3H3H3 to include Maths and either Physics or Technological Studies.
- IB Diploma: 26 to include Higher Level Maths and Physics at grade 5.
Minimum Entry Requirements
- SQA Higher: CCCC to include Maths and either Engineering Science, Physics, Chemistry, or Technological Studies.
Fees and Funding
- Scottish Students: 」1,820 per year for 4 years.
- Rest of UK Students: 」9,535 per year for 4 years (for the academic year mentioned, but note that fees can vary by academic year).
- International Students: 」18,940 per year for 4 years (for the academic year mentioned, but note that fees can vary by academic year).
Accreditation
The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council, partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
Facilities
The university provides state-of-the-art facilities, including Engineering Applications Labs, an Electrical Power Laboratory, and a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Pool, to support practical learning and research.
