Program Overview

Introduction to the BA (Hons) Business and Management Course

The BA (Hons) Business and Management course at Robert Gordon University is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of the nature and context of business, as well as the principal management functions within a business. This course is part of the popular business and management programme and has been designed to enable students to operate successfully in the increasingly complex and demanding business environment.

Course Overview

The course is a four-year undergraduate programme that covers a wide range of topics, including marketing, finance, human resource management, economics, and sustainability management. Students will have the opportunity to tailor their study to their own interests and career aspirations, with options to participate in short-term management and enterprise projects.

Year 1

In the first year, students will be introduced to the key business functions of marketing, finance, and human resource management. They will also tackle specialist modules in economics, the digital business environment, and sustainability management.

Year 2

In the second year, students can choose to continue their studies based in Aberdeen or spend Term 1 or 2 studying abroad. Modules studied in this year build on the foundation business functions learned in Year 1, including Business Law, Work and Organisational Behaviour, and Business Ideas and Opportunities.

Year 3

In the third year, students have four options: a year-long placement, an academic year at one of the university's partner institutions abroad, a taught route at Aberdeen Business School, or the 'Connect to Business' route. This provides students with flexibility to tailor their study to their own interests and career aspirations.

Year 4

In the final year, students will study core modules in contemporary areas, including Business Strategy, Innovation, Corporate Ethics, and Global Leadership. They will also undertake a significant piece of independent research in the form of a thesis, with guidance and support from a dedicated Thesis Supervisor.

Learning and Teaching

Throughout the course, students will experience a range of learning and teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, and project supervision. The university's staff have either achieved Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or are working towards this, ensuring that students receive high-quality teaching and support.

Assessment

Students will be assessed through a combination of written exams, written assignments, and portfolios. The university aims to provide feedback within 20 working days of hand-in for all written exams, coursework, and practical exams.

Placements

In Year 3, students will have the opportunity to undertake a one-year salaried work placement or a 12-week unpaid placement on the 'Connect to Business' route. This provides students with the opportunity to consolidate and apply the learning they have gained in Years 1 and 2, and to acquire real-world business experience.

Job Prospects

This broad-based course will prepare students for a managerial career in industry or the public sector. The focus taken in later years of the course can widen opportunities for more specialist managerial positions. Previous graduates have gone on to pursue careers in customer service, tax analysis, accountancy, management consultancy, and marketing.
