Course Overview
The Introduction to Photography course is designed for beginners, aiming to develop an understanding of camera control and the ability to produce well-composed photographic images through guided exercises. This course will encourage students to develop knowledge of simple camera equipment and materials alongside visual literacy, which will develop a personal approach to creating images and the ability to reflect critically on the visual and cultural implications underlying the practice of photography.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this short course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to discuss and reflect critically on the photographic image within a broad context and show awareness of the role of photography in its social and cultural context (e.g., in personal/family, communication, industry, the arts, etc.).
- Convey their understanding of aspects of photographic composition (e.g., framing, viewpoint, choice of moment, color, line, tone, texture, pattern, movement, depth of field).
- Operate camera controls to produce well-composed images under various lighting conditions and demonstrate knowledge of how to control exposure, subject movement, and depth of field using aperture, shutter speed, focus, and depth of field.
- Engage in practical photographic assignments based on set themes and/or self-directed projects and present a set of photographic images utilizing the newly developed skills.
- Reflect critically on the appropriateness of different photographic working methods.

Requirements
Students are required to bring a digital DSLR camera with full manual controls, a tripod, and appropriate storage media (e.g., SD cards, external drives).
