Program Overview

Mechatronics Engineering Technology Degree Program Overview

Purdue University Northwest's Mechatronics Engineering Technology Program combines mechanical design, manufacturing, robotics, and electrical control, all centered around the foundations of packaging machinery. Students will obtain valuable skills needed in the advanced manufacturing industry, as well as healthcare, automotive, and other industries.

Why Study Mechatronics Engineering Technology at PNW?

In this program, students are trained with cutting-edge technology and develop the in-demand skills that employers seek, including Industry 4.0 technologies that are transforming the manufacturing industry. Students will learn from faculty members who have a wealth of real-world experience, are leaders in their respective disciplines, and dedicated mentors who share both theoretical and hands-on engineering knowledge.

Program Educational Objectives

  • Program Educational Objective One: The program will produce graduates that are prepared for successful careers in the areas associated with the analysis, applied design, development, implementation, and oversight of advanced mechatronic systems.
  • Program Educational Objective Two: The program will produce graduates that advance in their careers and continue their professional development.
  • Program Educational Objective Three: The program will produce graduates that understand the overall human context in which engineering technology activities take place.

Student Outcomes

Graduates of the Mechatronics Engineering Technology program will demonstrate:

  1. an ability to apply knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline;
  2. an ability to design systems, components, or processes meeting specified needs for broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline;
  3. an ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication in broadly-defined technical and non-technical environments; and an ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature;
  4. an ability to conduct standard tests, measurements, and experiments and to analyze and interpret the results to improve processes; and
  5. an ability to function effectively as a member as well as a leader on technical teams.

Mechatronics Engineering Technology Major Curriculum

You'll take a balance of general education courses, College of Technology core courses and mechatronics engineering technology courses. Our curriculum is a synergistic blend of mechanical, electrical, control, hydraulics, automation, robotics, networking and computer systems technology with a focus on building the interdisciplinary skills necessary for today's industry.

Year One

Introductory courses prepare the foundation for Mechatronics by blending fundamental courses related to electrical, electronics, and mechanical disciplines, including hands-on machining.

  • ECET 10900 Digital Fundamentals
  • MET 10000 Production Drawing and Computer-Aided Design
  • MET 24200 Manufacturing Processes II

Year Two

Deeper knowledge is built by integrating theory with extensive hands-on laboratory training, mathematics, science, and electrical motors.

  • MET 21300 Dynamics
  • ECET 21201 Electrical Power and Motors

Year Three

Integration of electrical and mechanical systems begin with courses focusing on applying control using industry-grade hardware and software.

  • ECET 26200 Programmable Logic Controllers
  • MCET 33000 Industrial Programming and Networking

Year Four

Senior Design Project provides the opportunity to pursue an idea from conception to design, then execute into a demonstrable project. A minor in industrial robotics adds marketability.

  • ET 49700 Senior Project
  • MCET 38200 Programming Industrial Robots
  • MCET 48200 Application of Industrial Robots for Advanced Manufacturing
